International Broadcasting Convention - IBC2005

IBC 2005 -- Room O, RAI Congress Centre, Amsterdam

DATE: Monday, 12 September, 9am - 12noon

INTRODUCTION

The MPEG Industry Forum (MPEGIF) is presenting an informational super-session at IBC this year entitled "The Video Ecosystem". Industry experts representing the most influential players in next generation video entertainment multimedia and standards-based streaming exchange their views on trends and technologies that are changing the way digital multimedia is created, compressed, and delivered.

The Super-session will be highlighted by a Keynote Address from Roger Lynch, chairman and CEO of Video Networks Ltd, the world's first commercial deployment of MPEG-4 AVC in a TV over DSL. Before and after the keynote, industry leaders will discuss issues and their experiences with Creation and Consumption of the next generation of video and audio. The Roundtable discussions will also include members of the ISMA and AVC Alliance.

The world of TV entertainment and PC streaming are finally converging and an ecosystem is emerging, with new video and audio codecs, new middleware and content protection methods and a completely new viewing experience. Service operators adopting these new video technologies will share their experiences to date as they deploy these new services around the world.

Gain insider perspectives on the future of MPEG-4 AVC/H.264 video and other emerging MPEG technologies, the importance of IP distribution and how it will affect the ubiquity of video entertainment; potential business models and preferences for viewing and connecting content in the home, in the office or on the handheld device.

Key questions like how IP is transforming the future and creating completely new viewing experiences for the consumer with new channel change characteristics, incremental screen services and the seamless integration of real-time broadcast content with time-shifted on-demand content. Hear about the latest regarding the ongoing saga of the licensing of these new technologies, the role of the PC in the new video distribution model, and how the AVC ecosystem compares to Windows Media Series technologies.

This "The Video Ecosystem" Super-session is the latest in a series of events focused on these topics and follows the hugely successful super-sessions staged at NAB 2003, 2004& 2005and IBC 2003 & 2004. The even will be recorded and be made available later for the broadest possible audience to this discussion.

Thank you to Fraunhofer for their sponsorship of this event

PROGRAM

09:00 - 09:05 a.m. Introduction and Welcome
Sebastian Moeritz, President, MPEGIF - CEO, dicas

09:05 - 10:10 a.m. Session 1: Next generation Video and Audio - Content Creation
This roundtable is made up of industry notables and visionaries from next generation service operators. They will discuss the elements of the preparation and generation side of the new video/audio ecosystem including content protection sub-systems, video optimized DSLAMs, edge routers, switches, encoders and especially middleware. We will hear about the challenges; is an IP based ecosystem capable of delivering differentiators such as accelerated channel change and yet remain scalable; how soon will end to end interoperability be the norm; what are the licensing terms and use fees and the consequences for adopters of this new technology; which codec to pick; what value is there in standards in transport and elsewhere. Panelists will bust open some of the myths in this area regarding data rates operators should expect, availability of supporting products and their path to full optimization. This roundtable will also address the status of MPEGIF's logo qualification and interoperability conformance programs.
Moderator: TBD
Speakers: Jonathan Beavon, NDS | Robin Boldon, BBC | Peter Gutman, Video Networks | Rich Mavrogeanes, VBrick | Dr. Satish Menon, Kasenna | Harald Popp, Fraunhofer | David Price, Harmonic | Tom Rosenstein, Seachange | Andrew Wajs, Irdeto Access | Bob Wilson, Modulus | Robin Wilson, Nagravision Tiaan Schutte, Alcatel

10:10 - 10:25 a.m. Networking Break

10:25 -10.55 a.m. Morning Keynote
Speaker: Roger Lynch, Chairman and CEO, Video Networks Ltd

Roger joined Video Networks as Chairman and CEO in January 2003. Previously, Roger was President and CEO of Chello Broadband, Europe's largest broadband ISP at the time, where he grew that business from 20,000 subscribers to over 400,000 in less than two years. During this time, Chello won numerous awards for it's innovative service, including Best Consumer ISP in Europe by the ISP Forum. Prior to this, Roger was an investment banker with Morgan Stanley in London, Silicon Valley and New York where he specialized in Internet, technology and media corporate finance. In this role Roger orchestrated IPOs, financings and mergers for more than 35 leading companies. Previous to this, Roger had roles managing manufacturing operations and in physics/engineering. Roger has an MBA with Highest Distinction from Dartmouth College where he also was a Tuck Scholar and recipient of the Leach Prize for Excellence in Finance, and a B.Sc. in Physics from the University of Southern California. In May 2005, Roger was also appointed as an Executive Committee Member of the British Screen Advisory Council.

10:55 - 11:55 a.m. Session 2: Next generation Video and Audio - Content Consumption
This roundtable will address the challenge facing all operators, new and old as consumption is expected on multiple devices from the residential TV to the mobile device. How can operators make money in a world of P2P and where content is expected for free while, in parallel, technology is available to deny revenues from conventional interstitial advertising? Panelists will discuss the availability of the consumption elements of the ecosystem including set top boxes, residential gateways, mobile devices and downloadable codecs. How quickly will CPE volume reduce the CPE Cap-Ex load to levels comparable with today's MPEG-2 and how long will operators have to get ROI on their CPE before obsolescence causes another round of cap-ex? How can operators leverage delivery to multiple devices in addition to churn pre-emption? Is it possible to link all devices into one truly intelligent network?
Moderator: Stuart Thomson, Editor, Cable and Satellite Europe
Speakers: Mauro Bonomi, Minerva | Robert Fransdonk, entriq | Hugo Gaggioni, Sony | Yosi Glick, Orca | Christophe Lenaerts, Telemak | Sebastian Moeritz, dicas | Silvio Perich, Sigma Designs | Dave Singer, Apple | Glen Morton, Widevine Michael Wise, AOL | Didier Zwierski, Thomson David Gillies, VP Pace

011:55 - 12:00 noon Closing Remarks
David Price, Vice President, MPEGIF - Vice President, Harmonic Inc.
