International Broadcasting Convention - IBC2003

Compression: More For Less

Sunday 14 September 2003, 14:00 - 17:00

New compression systems are now emerging that challenge the dominance of MPEG-2. These new algorithms claim an improvement in efficiency of more than a factor of two; it should be possible to obtain comparable video quality at less than half the bit-rate needed for MPEG-2. Is this reality or just hype? Can these more complex new algorithms be implemented at a cost that the market will bear? How can they co-exist with the established MPEG-2 systems? How does Microsoft Windows Media 9 Series compare with the emerging H.264/AVC standard?
